Our tap water contains some minerals that are naturally occurring. This is what makes water "hard." The amount of these minerals depends on where you live. All appliances that use heated water, can build up these minerals over time. Suvie's reservoir can also build up these minerals over time on its interior walls. Running a cleaning process to remove these minerals is called "descaling." You can descale your Suvie just like you descale a coffee or espresso maker. We suggest using a simple citric acid solution which is food safe. If you follow our proper descaling instructions below, it will not impact your machine performance or the taste of your food.
Part 1: Descaling Your Machine
You Will Need:
- 12 grams (or 1 tablespoon) of food grade citric acid
- Suvie Starch Pan
Instructions:
- Place only the Starch Pan in the lower right slot of your Suvie (leave the other pans out of the appliance).
- Add approximately 12 grams (1 tablespoon) of citric acid to the bottom of your reservoir, both in the main body and in the fill tube. Citric acid is a common food additive that is found in lemons.
- After adding the citric acid, fill the reservoir up to the Fill Line with tap water.
- Run a Quick Rinse with this citric acid solution and let it fully drain.
- Make sure to discard the remaining water in your Water Reservoir, Drain Tray and Starch Pan
- Run 2 more additional Quick Rinses with tap water to clean out your appliance of citric acid.
Do not forget to discard out the water in the Water Reservoir, Drain Pan and Starch Pan each time - You should have now run 3 Quick Rinses, and after discarding the remaining water, you are ready to cook with your Suvie again.
Part 2: Cleaning Your Reservoir
You Will Need:
- 12 grams (or approximately 1 tablespoon) of food grade citric acid
- Paper towels or a clean, dry cloth
- (Optional) Chopstick or dowel, or a brush
Instructions:
- If you notice that your appliance’s reservoir is covered in mineral sale (looks like a white powder), you can clean it safely with a citric acid solution.
- Fill your reservoir halfway with water, mix in 12g (1 tablespoon) of citric acid until it is dissolved, then fill the rest of your reservoir to as close to the top as possible. Pour half of the citric acid into the fill tube and half outside the fill tube.
- Place your reservoir in your sink, and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. This will allow the citric acid to break down the scale layer.
- After 30 minutes, discard the water, and wipe the insides of the reservoir with a damp paper towel. If the layer of powder does not come off with light scrubbing, you may need to repeat the above steps with more citric acid and more soaking.
- To clean the fill tube, you can use a bottle brush. If you do not have a bottle brush, we suggest wrapping a paper tower around a chopstick or dowel, and using that to push the paper towel into the fill tube. Make sure you do not push it in all the way, so you are able to pull it out. Keep doing this until the fill tube is clean.
